WEBCOZA CASE STUDY

Body and Mind: Supporting a Long-Running South African Wellness Directory

Body and Mind is not a five-page brochure website. It is a long-running South African health and wellbeing directory with practitioner listings, educational content, events and a growing collection of information that needs to remain useful as the platform evolves.

WebCoZa’s work focuses on helping the website remain structured, maintainable and capable of supporting a large and changing body of content.

THE PROJECT

A Website With More Than Two Decades of History

Body and Mind went online in 2000 with the idea of connecting South Africans with practitioners and information across health, wellbeing and complementary therapies.

That history is valuable — but it also creates a very different technical challenge from building a new website with twenty pages and no legacy content.

A long-running directory accumulates listings, categories, old URLs, images, articles, events, member information and years of search-engine history. Changing the website therefore has to be done carefully.

THE CHALLENGE

Keeping a Large Directory Useful

Directory websites become complicated because the content never really stands still.

Large Amounts of Content

Practitioner profiles, categories, events and educational content need a structure that visitors can actually navigate.

Old and New URLs

A website with years of history may have links already indexed by search engines or referenced elsewhere. Changes therefore need sensible redirects and careful handling rather than simply deleting everything old.

Changing Membership

Directory listings change as practitioners join, update their information or leave. The website has to support that ongoing cycle without becoming a graveyard of forgotten profiles.

Several Visitor Journeys

One visitor may be searching for a practitioner, another an event, while a wellness professional may be investigating membership or advertising opportunities.

WHAT WE WORK ON

More Than Redesigning a Homepage

The useful work on an established directory often happens behind the scenes as much as it does in the visible design.

Directory Structure

Practitioner content needs categories and pathways that help visitors move from a broad interest to useful individual listings.

Content Organisation

Existing and new information needs to fit into a coherent structure rather than becoming another pile of pages attached to the website.

Legacy URL Management

When URLs change, redirects help preserve useful pathways for visitors and search engines rather than sending old links directly into a 404 page.

SEO Structure

Categories, listings, page titles, headings and internal links all contribute to helping search engines understand a large directory.

Ongoing Maintenance

Directory websites need continuing attention as software, content and membership change.

Content Cleanup

Established websites inevitably collect outdated, duplicated or unwanted material. Part of maintaining the site is deciding what should remain, what should change and what should disappear.

WHY WE APPROACH IT THIS WAY

Don’t Throw Away 20+ Years of Website History for a Shiny Template

A redesign can make an old website look newer in an afternoon. That does not mean the underlying website has been improved.

With an established directory, existing content, URLs, member information and search history have value. The job is therefore to improve the platform without casually discarding useful assets that have accumulated over many years.

Sometimes the least glamorous part of the project — redirects, cleanup, categorisation and migration planning — is also the part that prevents the biggest headaches later.

THE DIRECTORY IN PRACTICE

Different Content for Different Visitors

The website needs to support discovery without forcing everyone through the same journey.

Practitioner Discovery

Visitors can explore health and wellness practitioners through directory and category content rather than relying on a single generic list.

Events

Events and wellness activities give the platform a role beyond static practitioner profiles.

Membership & Exposure

The website also serves practitioners and wellness businesses looking for visibility within an established South African directory.

THE OUTCOME

An Established Platform That Can Keep Evolving

The goal is not to pretend a directory with decades of history can be reduced to one clever redesign screenshot.

Existing History Remains Valuable

The site’s long-standing content and existing online footprint can continue to support the platform rather than being discarded simply because the design or technology changes.

New Members Can Be Added

The directory can continue growing as new wellness professionals and businesses are introduced.

Different Content Types Can Coexist

Practitioner listings, informational content, events and membership pathways can sit within the same broader platform.

The Website Remains an Ongoing Project

An active directory needs continuous refinement rather than being considered finished on the day a redesign goes live.

THE WEBSITE IN PRACTICE

A Directory Has to Help People Find Their Way Around

Body and Mind combines a large amount of information with practitioner discovery, categories and ongoing content. The website therefore needs to make a substantial directory feel approachable rather than overwhelming.

HAVE AN ESTABLISHED WEBSITE?

You Don’t Necessarily Need to Throw It Away and Start Again

If your website has years of content, rankings, customer links or business history behind it, the sensible answer may be to improve what has value rather than erase everything and hope Google develops amnesia.
